Week of April 27

What a fun and busy week we had in Kindergarten!

The biggest highlight was our Tutty Pond picnic. The children were VERY excited to go, and they were absolutely fabulous while we were there! They showed great manners, listened carefully, and had so much fun exploring outside. We brought some outdoor toys such as bubbles, ribbons, and bug catchers, used our whiteboards, and enjoyed learning in nature. We even built a lean-to with some of the dead fall we found. Of course we cleaned everything up and put nature back to nature after we were done playing with it. Ms. Yvonne's class joined us and we had a great time seeing everyone.

In Language Arts, we worked hard on our letter names and sounds by singing our phonics songs and practicing together every day. We reviewed our sound this week: the letter “Ee.” The children had fun playing a stand up/sit down game to listen for the /e/ sound in words like “egg” and “ten.” We also practiced writing the letter “e” on the board.

We continued reviewing our sight words: the, and, I, a, is, as, like, said, to, do, and of. The students are becoming more confident reading and recognizing these words. We also enjoyed listening to stories and visiting the library. IN the afternoon we have some Grade 9 work experience students who are joining us 2 days per week and are helping us review some of our L.A concepts to get us ready for Grade 1.

In Math, we practiced writing numbers 2 and 3, some of the students are having trouble printing these numbers as curves can be harder to make than our straight line numbers. We also explored 3D shapes! We reviewed 2D shapes and began learning about 3D shapes, talking about the different ones we can see in our world, and naming the mini shapes Ms. Kel-Cie handed out. The shapes we are focusing on are cylinders, spheres, cubes, rectangular prisms, pyramids, and cones.

We made some amazing shapes birds in art! The students picked 3 different shapes for their brids to be and worked incredibly hard on following our instructions. They truly turned out wonderfully, with each being a unique piece of artwork that they can be proud of.

In Science we finsihed observing our growing grass. We talked about what plants need to grow (sunlught, water, and soil) and watched our tiny seeds spout into tall, tall grass! We observed and recorded each day in our observations booklets. This grass is coming home with the students so keep an eye out!

We also had lots of opportunities to build our classroom community. Our Star Students shared special things like “All About Me,” show and tell, and even spent time sitting with a friend. We also talked about being a “Good Friend” and what that looks like in our classroom.

It was a joyful week full of learning, sharing, and adventure. Thank you for your support—we love seeing the children grow each day!
