Week of April 13

This week in Kindergarten has been full of fun and learning. We enjoyed some extra time outdoors. The playground and the grass are drying up so well that we even had gym outside. We practiced our soccer skills and passing the ball to our friends. It was exciting to move around and play in the fresh air.

In Language Arts, we are continuing with our sight words. The words we are practicing are the, and, I, a, is, as, like, said, to, and do. We are paying attention to whether we hear a sound at the beginning or the end of a word. Every morning, we solve "Mystery Words" by writing the letter of the beginning sound of each picture. Then we practice sound segmenting, which means saying each sound, and blending, which means putting all the sounds together smoothly to form a word. We also played a fun game called "Boom, Clap, Grab." In this game, we have two different sight words in front of us. We share these words with a partner, and when the teacher says boom, we pat our thighs. When she says clap, we clap our hands. When she says sight words, we try to be the fastest to grab the word that was named.

In Math, we are building our number knowledge, especially in our learning centres. Right now, we have games where we find the number that comes before and after another number to put them in the right order. We also count and compare numbers in our bug centre. One of the most popular centres is "Go Fish" with Ms. Mascha. In this game, we work on number recognition and matching while having a lot of fun.

In Art, the AM class had a lesson on how Pinterest can sometimes be deceiving. We tried making prints with tin foil and Q-tips. They did not turn out as expected, but painting the tin foil was still very fun. The PM class tried something different. We made gorgeous backgrounds by coloring tin foil with markers and then spraying it with a water bottle. The results were beautiful and colorful.

In Science we have exploring what happens in each season, focusing on Spring. In spring baby animals are born and the plants begin to grow making things green again. We looked for some of the new grass that has been growing in our school yard and watched a silly video on what plants needs featuring Grover from Sesame Street (they do not need pizza or Hungarian Goulash).

It has been such a joyful week filled with outdoor play, reading, math adventures, and creative art. We cannot wait to see what next week will bring.
