Week of April 7th

We had a wonderful and busy week in our classroom. The students are working so hard and showing great growth every day. Here is a look at what we have been learning together.

In L.A we practiced writing our star student’s name, and our printing is really coming along. We are working hard to be Grade 1 ready by printing neatly on the line and paying close attention to the middle line when forming our letters.

We also reviewed our sight words: the, and, I, a, is, as, like, said. The students are getting better at recognizing and using these words in their reading and writing.

We talked about how illustrations and sentences share information that goes together. The students practiced writing a simple sentence and then creating a drawing that matched their idea. It was wonderful to see their creativity.

In our journals, we are practicing starting our writing on the left side of the page. We are remembering not to start in the middle. These small habits are helping us become strong writers.

In math, we had so much fun playing number musical tables. We danced while the music played, and when it stopped, we went to a table and wrote the correct numeral. This helped us practice recognizing and forming numbers.

We are also working on correct numeral formation so our numbers are clear and easy to read.

We played a game called What Comes Next. I would give a starting number, like 3, and the students counted forward three more numbers. This helped build our counting confidence.

In Science and Wellness we have been learning about healthy food and unhealthy food. We talked about foods we can eat all the time and foods we should only eat some of the time.

We also explored where food comes from. We learned that some food comes from gardens, farms, and even from fishing.

We watched a slideshow that showed us where different foods grow. For example, bananas do not grow in Canada. They grow on trees in hot tropical places and travel to Canada on big ships. Corn grows right here in Canada on very tall stalks. We also learned that Indigenous Peoples in Canada grew corn in many beautiful colours, not just yellow.

For our big Friday activity, we explored motion and movement. We read the book Ricky the Rock Who Couldn’t Roll. Ricky was flat on one side and could only slide, but he really wanted to roll like his friends.

The students each received a flat rock and gave it a name. Mine was Harold. Then we worked together to think of ways to help our rocks roll down a ramp.

The creativity in the classroom was amazing. The students came up with so many clever ideas and worked with great focus and excitement. Ms. Mascha and I were so proud of their problem solving skills.
