We had such a full, fun, and exciting week in kindergarten, and the students were busy learning, creating, and playing every single day!
In Language Arts, we continued building our literacy skills by recognizing letter names and sounds. We worked through our UFLI program, focusing on the letter sounds /a/, /m/, /s/, and /t/. We also introduced a brand-new writing convention, the period. The students learned that a period tells us to stop and take a breath, which was a big and exciting step in understanding how writing works. Our home reading program was sent home on Friday, and many students are already so excited to show you what they know! We also practiced writing our Star Student’s name, recognizing letters, and reinforcing the important rule that names always start with an uppercase letter.
In Art, creativity was in full swing! We made an igloo home for our little penguin while strengthening our fine motor skills. The students worked hard on their scissor and glue skills, and they did a fantastic job. We also explored a fun fine motor art activity where students pushed different objects around their papers using markers. This activity helps develop the motor control needed for writing, encourages problem-solving, and best of all the kids had a blast as I kept surprising them with new objects to move around!
It was a pretty chilly week, which meant we had quite a few indoor recesses. Thankfully, both classes also had gym this week, which helped everyone burn off some of that youthful energy!
We also have a bit of magic happening in our school…A library fairy has taken up residence in our school library. The students have spent centre time and library time creating artwork and letters just for her. She is very secretive and scared of loud noises, so we haven’t seen her yet but the kids are loving the mystery and showing so much care and creativity.
In Math, we have been reinforcing counting to 10 and one-to-one correspondence. We practiced writing our numbers and played a very popular game called “Musical Tables.” While music played, students moved around the room, and when the music stopped, they rushed to a table and started writing the number I called out. We played this one several times because the students loved it so much! We also played “Dice Wars,” a dice battle game that had us thinking about more and less, bigger and smaller, greater than, less than, and equal. Students worked in pairs and rolled the dice to see who could get the bigger number each round.
Of course, we also had plenty of time for centre play, building friendships and imagination, and we ended the week with a wonderful pajama and hot chocolate party in Ms. Yvonne’s room a perfect cozy celebration for the very cold day that was Friday.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful children with me. They truly bring so much joy to my day, and I feel so lucky to learn and laugh alongside them every week.
