We had a busy and exciting week in Kindergarten filled with learning, games, and exploration! Ok there are a ton of photos this week! I just couldn't decide which ones not to include!
In Math, we practiced our number skills in several fun ways. One of the class favorites was Musical Tables. While the music played, we moved around the room, and when it stopped we hurried to a table and wrote down numbers from 0–4. We also continued practicing the concepts of most and least by playing some interactive online games together as a class.
Another activity helped us understand how numbers can be composed and decomposed. We created groups of 5 students and explored different combinations, such as 1 girl and 4 boys, 2 girls and 3 boys, and other ways to make five. It was a great way to see how numbers can be put together in different ways!
We also played a fun game of Tug-of-War with candy hearts, where students rolled a die and tried to move their candy heart across the board to their side. Throughout the week we practiced counting forward from 0–10 and backward from 10–0 to build our number fluency.
In Language Arts, we continued working on recognizing our sight words, including our new word “is.” We are also beginning to build our writing stamina. Students completed their first tabletop worksheet by writing sight words while following along with Hubble the Alien from our YouTube video.
We also practiced using our new vowel sound /o/ to build and read CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant). One of our favorite games this week was “Fish and Build,” where students “fished” for letters and used them to create CVC words.
In Science, we began exploring the idea of natural vs. man-made objects. We tried to get outside as much as possible this week, and one morning we even brought our toy cars outside to experiment with big ramps on the playground slides to see how the cars moved down them.
In Social we talk about leaders in our community and Constable Jeff came to visit with his dog Rosie.
We also had a special exploration activity connected to Ms. Mascha’s recent trip. After many student questions, we investigated different forms and stages of coconut! Students examined a brown hard-shelled coconut, a peeled soft coconut, and tasted sweetened and unsweetened shaved coconut.
This led to some fantastic Quotes of the Week, including:
“Wait… coconuts are real! I thought they were only in cartoons?!”
“Ms. Kel-Cie, why are you feeding us soap? My mom has this soap in her bathroom.”
It was a wonderful week full of curiosity, laughter, and hands-on learning. The students are continuing to grow in their confidence with numbers, reading, and writing, and they are asking thoughtful questions about the world around them. We are so proud of their effort and enthusiasm, and we are excited to see what discoveries next week will bring!
